The Siberian is a strong, heavy, muscular and elegant cat. This independent and demure, very beautiful semi-longhaired feline is one of the biggest breeds in the World. Very intelligent and loving, they make ideal companions. Their wonderfull character and stunning looks are the result of natural inter-breeding between domesticated and wild forest cats.

Exactly when and how the Siberian made his way to Russia isn`t known. However, it's theorised that the breed developed as a result of natural inter-breeding between imported Europe Angoras and European Wild Cats. Siberian Lynx and Wild Forest Cat played an important part as well. The cats developed into a hardy, robust, longhaired breed able to withstand the unforgiving conditions of the region.

From Western Siberia, cats spread East and with human development were found rather useful. Even Peter the Great, in one of his scripts, mentioned the importance of keeping cats to guard and protect barns from rodents.

The Siberian is a large, strong cat that takes approximately 4-5 years to develop it's full weight, coat length and pattern. Males generally range from 12 to 15 pounds and females 8 to 11 pounds. At maturity, these cats are powerfully built with an overall appearance of strength and power, with excellent physical condition and alertness which allows easy and fast adaptation to different areas and climates. Despite their size Siberians are extremely agile and great leapers.

Developed in a cold climate, the Siberians possess a thick, semi-long to long coat. All colours and most patterns are accepted. The coat's long oily guard hairs give the coat water resistance. A long and silky ruff, "skirt" and bushy tail complete the cat's beautiful appearance .

They aren't afraid of water, and won't miss an opportunity to fish in the pond or investigate bathtubs before they are dry.

Self reliant and indifferent to dogs, these cats pick their favourite person, unmistakably the human leader in the family; other members classify as "the rest of the pack".

Siberian cats aren't just pets, they are beautiful and intelligent individuals, always inquisitive and with a generous dose of playfulness, they bring great joy to lucky owners.
