MAINE COONS

Maine Coons are one of the largest cat breeds.   They are thought to have originated from the forests in Maine, America.   These beautiful cats are believed to be a ‘natural’ cat that developed to adapt to the conditions that they were living in.   There are also stories that suggest they were the offspring of a cat and a Racoon – genetically impossible, or that Marie-Antionette’s Persian cats were shipwrecked nearby, and bred with the local cats, to produce a Maine Coon.

Maine Coons are known as the ‘gentle giants’ of the cat world.   They are quite large cats, but not as some suggest as big as dogs.  The males are very impressive cats and on maturity can reach between 12 – 18lbs, the females around 10 – 14lbs.   They have a semi longhaired coat that is flowing rather than fluffy.   The ears are large, and often have lynx tipping – that is tips to the tops of the ears.  Maine Coons should also have ear furnishings, which are long tufts growing out of the ears.   They have a big strong head with a square muzzle and deep strong chin.   When fully grown Maine Coons are quite tall and long, but take longer to mature than most other breeds.  A Maine Coon is not considered mature until around 3 years old.   They come in a wide variety of colours, some are self (solid) colours, or tabby patterns, with/without white.

Buddy is a high white brown tabby who has a wonderful gentle temperament and is doing very well on the show bench. He has won his Open class as a kitten every time so far. Buddy is 'ace' at retrieving toys and scrunched up balls of paper and returning it back to you every time. We tire of the game before he does!!!! We hope that Buddy will become our new stud boy in time.

Quinty has grown into a big loveable softie.  He is the cat everyone who visits wants to take home!  He loves anyone who will cuddle him.  Quinty lives with Custer and Gypsy and has time in the garden and comes inside daily for special cuddles with my husband Malcolm who he adores.

Brown Tabby & White
Gypsy has now been speyed as she has always been a very nervous cat. AFter showing her a couple of times it became clear that she didn't enjoy the show scene, so she now stays with the boys and is much happier.

Molly is a lovely big Brown Tabby & White girl who escaped through a window and found her own mate, producing a litter of Mainemogs!! in 2009. She had two lovely kittens in 2010, one boy of which won at his first show. I am looking to keep a boy from Molly and Custer next year.

Rosie is a Tortie Smoke with White and is very distinctively marked. She is producing lovely big kittens with Custer. Rosie is Molly's pal and together they get up to all sorts of mischief. Rosie is very laid back and loves her cuddles.

Lady is a beautiful Red Tabby girl who my good friends, Carole and Ralph, gave to me for 'services rendered' when they needed my help. I'm very grateful to them as Lady is a big boned typy cat and doing so well on the show bench. She will compliment my breeding programme and will be mated to a big Black & White boy soon.

Cherry is a Red Silver and White kitten I couldn't let go! Well there's always one from time to time. Cherry is currently on the show bench and doing very well. We hope for kittens in 2011 and will be mating her to a very nice Silver Tabby boy.

Fleur is a lovely Odd Eyed White Maine Coon who is growing into a big girl. She is particularly fond of Malcolm and will sleep on his chest, as Champers used to do, so goes a long way to easing Malcolm's loss of Champers.
